How to unscramble letters and find the right word
A word unscrambler is only useful if it gives you control. One huge list with no explanation helps nobody. We check which English words your letters can build, we count repeats properly, and we let you narrow things down by position, length or how common a word is. It all happens in your browser, so you can try anything you like and none of your letters reach us.
Start with the letters you know
Type the letters you have, exactly as they are. Repeats count: LETTER has two Es and two Ts, LATER does not. Spaces, punctuation and capitals are cleaned up for you. If you do not know one tile, type a question mark or a star. That stands for one letter. It does not give you an extra tile.
Choose exact or shorter matches
This page finds words made from some or all of your letters. That helps when you hold more tiles than the answer needs. Set a length when the puzzle gives you a fixed number of boxes. If every letter must be used, open the Anagram Solver. For mixed-letter puzzle clues, the Jumble Solver highlights full-length candidates first.
Apply only the clues you have
Use “Starts with” or “Ends with” when a crossing letter pins down an edge. “Contains” asks for letters anywhere in the answer, and it counts repeats. The pattern field pins exact spots: E_O is a three-letter word starting with E and ending with O, and the underscore is any letter. Two clues you trust beat five you are guessing at.

Unscrambling LISTEN
Type LISTEN and you get six-letter answers like ENLIST, INLETS, LISTEN, SILENT and TINSEL, plus shorter words that use only part of it. Set the length to 6 if you only want the full ones. Turn on “Common words only” for a shorter, more familiar list.

How results are ordered
Longest first is the default, because long words are the hardest to spot and usually the most useful. You can also put the short ones first, sort A–Z or Z–A, rank by tile score, or push common words above rare ones. Every length group shows its own count. Big groups stay closed until you press “Show more”, which keeps the page quick on a phone.
Click a word to see what it means and to copy it. “Copy all” gives you the whole list at once. “Share results” adds the link. That link holds your letters and filters and nothing about you, so a friend can open the same search and see the same words.
What the dictionary does—and does not—mean
Our browser-ready list holds 168,468 cleaned entries. Most come from ENABLE, plus a small documented supplement, and there is a separate common-word subset. It is designed for broad English words. It is not the official list for Scrabble, Words With Friends, a newspaper or any other game. Those products use different editions, different spellings and different rules about names. Treat what you see as a strong candidate, then check the list your game names if it has to count.
Scores use the standard English tile values. They leave out board bonuses, rack bonuses and whatever else your game adds. We say so, rather than let the number look official. Read the full word-list method for source and cleaning details.
Five quick strategies for solving by eye
- Separate common endings. Look for combinations such as -ING, -ED, -ER, or -LY, then rearrange what remains.
- Pair frequent letters. TH, SH, CH, QU, and vowel-consonant pairs can reveal the shape of a word.
- Count every duplicate. A promising answer is invalid if it needs a second letter that your rack does not contain.
- Read the clue before you add filters. Meaning and grammar tell a noun from a verb, even when both fit your letters.
- Work from long to short. A long word often shows you several smaller ones inside it, and makes the leftover tiles easier to read.
